Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) is a gamma subunit homodimer and is the dominant form of the enolase isoenzymes found in neuronal and neuroendocrine cells.
Strong cytoplasmic staining for NSE is seen in this neuroendocrine carcinoma (Merkel cell caracinoma).
Pancreatic acinar cells and ductal epithelium are negative for NSE expression, while islet cells are positive.
